SU

Hi All,

SU carburettors are one of the staples of a British classic car.

I didn't give mine any TLC at the last MOT / emissions testing and got away with it, however, the car is developing a bit of a flat spot when pulling gently at around 2500 RPM.
So I thought the first place to look should be to clean the carbs.

Armed with a couple of spanners and a can of foaming carb cleaner off I went.

Pulled them off. Quite a build up of crud, you can see the marks on the piston.

Partially dismantled, took the needles out but not the float chamber off or the jet out.

Back together, looking nicer.

And back in. I also cleaned the heat shield underneath while they were off as well.

All back together, looks better but engine bay still needs a good clean with a toothbrush.

She seems okay, however, only time will tell if it was the problem or something more insidious.

Cheers,
Richard B.

Next . . . . . Hmm, maybe get a strobe and check the timing or a new rocker gasket and fit the polished cover at last.

The other Women - BMW 120D

Hi All,

I know I've been quiet recently, thank fully the MGB is behaving, but this one isn't.

She is a BMW 120D endurance racer run by SVDP racing here in Dubai.

A team of us from the local Petrolheads forum are all acting as spanner monkey's.

However our first event the Dubai 24 hours was a DNS, much problems with injectors and electronics.

Full write up is here at circuit pro digital magazine.

We spent more time in the pits than on the track, if only this was the real reason !

Despite the poor result it was great working with such a like minded bunch and as a result the car has been withdrawn from its former mechanics, a professional garage and a bunch of us are now working on her.

After a few weeks we have got the fuel issues sorted and now got a proper code reader and making progress into solving the problems. The plan is to run SPA, Barcelona and the Dubai 24 hours next season so stand by for lots more from the little 120.

Cheers,
Richard B.

Next . . . . . . . Hopefully a report of a good test day at the track with the 120D.

RANT - Car show, or NOT

Hi All,

Warning RANT coming.

Last year just after I got the car there was the annual car show but too late for me to enter, however this year I registered as soon as entries opened. I filled in all the forms etc and got the entry details a few days before the event.
Hmm it rains this time of year, so I sent them an email asking what was the plan and told no problem.
Turned up at the event tonight, lots of tents seems good.
Register and then got told to go and park out side !
Feck, no way I am leaving my car outside with the potential for rain, she is a car not a bathtub, so home I went.

Clear case of the normal organisational systems and not enough Wasta !
- Hard top and Wasta = Tent
- Convertible and no Wasta = Flooded car.

Welcome to the world of car shows !

Richard B.
